Australian mother wants law to protect unborn babies

Days before Australian woman Sarah Milosevic was due to give birth to her daughter, a drunk driver crashed into her car and shattered her world.
Her unborn baby, to be named Sophie, didn’t survive the crash.
The driver responsible for the 2014 crash at Logan, south of Brisbane, was in November given a A$950 (NZ$1020) fine and a five-month driving suspension.
The sense of injustice Milosevic felt sparked her into action and, on Thursday, she met Queensland’s attorney-general Yvette D’Ath to push for “Sophie’s Law” in honour of the daughter she never got to watch grow up.
“It’s difficult to talk about, but it’s important for me to have a legacy left for Sophie because she can’t leave her own legacy,” Milosevic said.
“She can’t ever have a voice herself and it’s important this goes through so no-one has to go through the same injustice.”
Milosevic hopes Sophie’s legacy is in the form of new laws that dish out harsh punishments for people who kill unborn children who are more than 30 weeks along.
She also wants those children to be issued with death certificates.
