Costco chooses life
A positive pro-life decision, as Costco USA declines to provide abortion pills.
In some good news, large wholesale retailer Costco in the United States has decided it will not supply the abortion drug, mifepristone. Costco noted there was little demand and consequently, it will not be selling the abortifacient across its 500+ pharmacies.
The likes of the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) and many others have been strongly lobbying Costco and other pharmacy chains (Walmart, CVS, and others) to pull the drug noting the drug kills an unborn baby but also has safety issues for the women using the drug.
The mounting pressure on the likes of Costco by these and other pro-life groups has clearly had an impact, with the likes of Costco wanting to avoid being caught up in politically and culturally controversial issues.
Costco USA’s decision is to be applauded.
Sadly, here in New Zealand, mifepristone is readily available despite growing evidence of the risks to women’s health (and of course, the death of the unborn child).
A recent research report by The Ethics and Public Policy Center – a Washington DC-based institute – noted that 10.93 percent of women experienced sepsis, infection, haemorrhaging, or other serious adverse events within 45 days following the use of the abortion drug, mifepristone.
The report was entitled “The Abortion Pill Harms Women: Insurance Data Reveals One in Ten Patients Experiences a Serious Adverse Event.” Sadly, when we sent to New Zealand’s Ministry of Health, they effectively declined to engage with it. Instead, the Ministry sough to rely on outdate research from over 20 years ago.
As Bob McCoskrie noted in a media release in May this year, “that mifepristone is regularly used and promoted here in New Zealand means the Ministry of Health, Health NZ, and Medsafe have a duty of care to inform women of the real risks of using the drug. Those importing the drug for use must also take responsibility for the real harms this research has uncovered. To continue saying the drug’s use is harmless is demonstrably false and putting women at risk of significant harm”.
Please note, we are referring to Costco in the United States. Costco in New Zealand, as far as we are aware, has never sold mifepristone.
